Users please note that there are two small, one each red and green, leds on the narrow side of the USB plug. They may not be visible except when shaded and then with close inspection. They flicker as with the desk stand charger’s leds when the battery is not yet charged. A steady green light indicates full charge. The charge level from the USB cable was tested by placing radio and battery into the desktop charger. Its red led lit up for perhaps 30-60 seconds then green. Conclusion; this unit does work and is much handier than carrying around the desktop charger. Note; the first unit tested suffered an internal short and quit. Might have been operator error here in trying to measure the current output. I had not noticed the red/green leds on that one (until the red one appeared continuously after the plug quit) and had concluded that it was not charging.

Both fit the BaoFeng 3800 battery, meaning the one with the smaller i.d. should be used to ensure good electrical contact. What to do? The directions say to use the angle plug. It has a black plastic insert whereas the straight plug insert is yellow. This link, https://forum.digikey.com/t/measuring-power-supply-barrel-plug-id-2-1mm-vs-2-5mm/401, demonstrates how to use the tapered tip of a ball point pen or a toothpick to determine inner diameter. Sure enough, using a ball point pen, the right angle plug (black plastic interior) has the smaller diameter. The instructions are correct. The right angle plug is the one to use. Now to see whether it charges the battery. 73 ki7mbr ole
